As with adults, the therapeutic relationship is paramount in the success of teens (and their caregivers) in therapy. Although a therapeutic relationship takes some time to form, a quick vibe check is often what you need to know if you’ll enjoy working together or not. We can do that on a consult call, but before that, let’s rule out some factors right away.
Wants a warm, direct therapist who balances skills with insight
Is open to parent involvement and home routines that support change
Can commit to (at least) weekly sessions for a period of time
Is comfortable with out-of-network care and telehealth
Highly manualized, homework-heavy treatment every week
